Board of Elections Schedules Media Day for June 20, 2013
As Part of 2013 Biennial Canvass Campaign
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The District of Columbia Board of Elections will hold a Media Day on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at One Judiciary Square, 441 4th Street NW, Suite 280 North. The meeting will begin at 10:00am. During the Media Day, the Board staff will explain the canvass process and provide ways for the media to assist the Board in notifying District residents about the importance of returning the canvass cards.
The Board is required to maintain a current voter roll, and the voting canvass serves as the primary mechanism for meeting this requirement [D.C. Official Code § 1-1001.07(j)(1)]. On Saturday, June 8, 2013, the Board began mailing 203,975 canvass cards. The canvass cards will be mailed to individuals who did not vote in the November 2012 General Presidential Election.
If District residents receive a canvass card and all information is correct (name and address), those individuals do not need to take any action. However, if a resident receives a canvass card and the addressee’s name on the canvass card no longer resides at the address, the occupant should follow the instructions on the card and return the card back to the Board. The Board believes that this Media Day will help notify District Residents about the canvass process and encourage active participation.
The District of Columbia Board of Elections is an independent agency of the District of Columbia Government responsible for the administration of elections, ballot access, and voter registration.
